Green transformation (GX) for holistic sustainability

DMG MORI is accelerating the transformation of machine tool manufacturing and NC production for greater economic and ecological sustainability.

As a global technology leader, DMG MORI is placing Machining Transformation (MX) at the center of its customer-oriented future strategy. An important building block for this is the Green Transformation (GX), which is being proactively driven forward with a large number of internal and external measures. The concept takes into account all aspects along the entire value chain - from sustainable purchasing and resource-saving machines with pioneering technologies and innovative features for efficient, energy-saving machine operation (GREENMODE) to overhauling and recycling at the end of the machine life cycle.  In addition, DMG MORI facilitates competence partnerships in the production of green technologies (GREENTECH).

Thanks to innovative hardware and software components, GREENMODE can reduce energy consumption by over 30 %.

Conservation of resources

Since 2021, DMG MORI has committed itself to the goals of the “Science Based Targets” initiative, which is committed to limiting global warming to a maximum of 1.5°C, and has set its own ambitious targets for reducing and avoiding emissions along the entire supply chain (Scope 1, 2 and 3 upstream). As a result, DMG MORI's manufacturing solutions are produced in a resource-saving manner, are of high quality, durable and recyclable. A high degree of process integration, automation and digitalization, which is reflected in the customer-oriented Machining Transformation (MX) framework, also ensures maximum efficiency.

GREENMODE

Increasing energy efficiency in industry is a key factor in achieving climate protection targets. Furthermore, reduced energy requirements are also becoming increasingly important economically in view of rising energy prices. With GREENMODE, DMG MORI has now redefined energy efficiency in manufacturing. The energy efficiency of machine tools is already decided at the development and design stage.

As with the entire Green Transformation, DMG MORI is also pursuing a holistic plan with 13 measures (including the Business Benefit Optimizer) when implementing the GREENMODE.

By using innovative hardware and software components, DMG MORI can reduce energy consumption by over 30 percent. Considerable savings are possible in process and machine cooling, which often account for up to 70 percent of the power consumption of a machine tool. Other examples include the demand-based operation of machine components, the use of highly efficient cooling units and the adaptive supply of cooling lubricant.

A fascinating example from the DMG MORI production plant in Iga, Japan, shows how closely excellence in mechanical engineering interacts with the Machining Transformation (MX) Framework in this holistic context. Here, the change to process integration in large parts production has reduced CO₂ emissions by 42 percent. Specifically, older gantry machining centers were replaced with state-of-the-art 5-axis machines for flexible complete machining. As a result, only 20 instead of 100 machines were suddenly required for the same work, reducing electricity consumption from 600 kW to 350 kW.

GREENTECH

GREENTECH stands for competence partnership for the development and manufacturing of sustainable products and technologies. The focus here is particularly on innovative components for applications such as wind power, hydropower, hydrogen electrolysis and electromobility and, once again, the comprehensive range of solutions from the Machining Transformation (MX) Framework product and service environment.

With the further development of green technologies, manufacturers and suppliers are confronted with new workpieces and often increasing machining requirements. In close cooperation with these users, DMG MORI designs manufacturing solutions that meet these challenges - from 5-axis simultaneous machining and 6-sided complete machining to additive manufacturing and laser precision machining. In the DMG MORI Excellence Centers DMG MORI supports its customers with bundled know-how from the idea to the finished product.

MACHINING TRANSFORMATION (MX)

In the Machining Transformation Framework, process integration, automation, digital transformation (DX) and green transformation (GX) ultimately merge into an innovative and sustainable whole. In the constantly evolving technological landscape of CNC manufacturing, the MX Framework stands as a beacon on the path to a new era of manufacturing processes and methods that are as cost-efficient as they are ecologically sustainable.
